INSTRUMENTS OF THE ORCHESTRA
Ms. Dixon and I are excited to take the 2nd and 3rd and 4th graders through this unit, using different symphonic pieces with each grade level to focus on the different instrument families. The 2nd graders will learn about several different instruments by using the Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens. The 3rd graders will learn about the different instrument families by studying Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev. We even collaborated with the Art teacher, Mrs. Mathers, and are planning to create a shadow puppet slide show to retell the story of Peter and the Wolf. The 4th graders will study the 4 instrument families and 4 instruments from each family. They will listen to many instrument samples and use the Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra by Benjamin Britten.

QUAVER'S HOLIDAY MUSIC
We, the Willard Music teachers, got a chance to meet with a Quaver representative in mid October. Some new items were released to us at that time. We are learning new things about this curriculum all the time. These two months are FULL of fun Music and activities that coincide with Fall, Thanksgiving, Winter, and Christmas. Quaver has several options that we are excited to try out with the students. Continuing on with the lessons/units, we are now learning about pitch, melody, and meter.

Last year, the Willard Elementary and Intermediate music teachers were able to attend the Missouri Music Educators Conference in TanTara. While we were there, we saw a demonstration of a new online music education resource. This school year, we are getting a chance to utilize this resource in all of our classrooms. Students in classrooms using Quaver will be introduced to Quaver’s world via fun, video episodes – a place filled with musical adventures that is part Bill Nye the Science Guy, part Beakman, and part Monty Python all rolled into one. Teachers may also use Quaver’s cutting-edge teaching resources on their Interactive Whiteboards or mobile devices, enhancing the technology in your child’s classroom!
We are also working on a part of the program where you may be able to access and use part of the program at home. The students may even be able to review things we teach in class, sing songs they remember from the lessons, show you their favorite video or activity. Stay tuned for more information as we get this set up for all of our buildings.
So far we have used lessons about rhythm, singing, and melody.

3rd Grade Program-How to Be a Pirate
October 11, 2016
This grade level starts the year with one "Hello and Welcome back to WEE Music" lesson. Then we dive right into their musical rehearsals. I found out the Book Fair was going to have a Pirate theme. I have a music teacher friend who has done this musical before and said it was fun. As soon as I introduced the story and songs to the students, they were All In! They are having a great time working on their pirate talk. It is going to be a great start to the Musical Year here at Willard East.
