WILLARD EAST FOURTH GRADE
Bobeen, Hicks, Moore
March/April
Ms. Dixon has been teaching some lessons on genres or music styles to the 4th graders. They are learning to identify each type, name the instruments used, and playing games to review the information in a fun way. These kids know several styles of music, AWESOME!

INSTRUMENTS OF THE ORCHESTRA
Ms. Dixon and I are excited to take the 2nd and 3rd and 4th graders through this unit, using different symphonic pieces with each grade level to focus on the different instrument families. The 2nd graders will learn about several different instruments by using the Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens. The 3rd graders will learn about the different instrument families by studying Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev. We even collaborated with the Art teacher, Mrs. Mathers, and are planning to create a shadow puppet slide show to retell the story of Peter and the Wolf. The 4th graders will study the 4 instrument families and 4 instruments from each family. They will listen to many instrument samples and use the Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra by Benjamin Britten.

Rehearse 4th Grade Musical--Santa's Holiday Playlist
These guys are going to have so much fun working on this musical. It tells the story of Santa and Mrs. Claus, getting ready to relax to some of their favorite tunes on the old record player, when it gets bumped and his record gets ruined. All of their North Pole friends try to help out by teaching Santa about modern technology and loading up their "playlists" for him. There will be lots of speaking parts, singing parts, instrument playing and dancing parts for which your kiddos will be able to audition.
Last year, the Willard Elementary and Intermediate music teachers were able to attend the Missouri Music Educators Conference in TanTara. While we were there, we saw a demonstration of a new online music education resource. This school year, we are getting a chance to utilize this resource in all of our classrooms. Students in classrooms using Quaver will be introduced to Quaver’s world via fun, video episodes – a place filled with musical adventures that is part Bill Nye the Science Guy, part Beakman, and part Monty Python all rolled into one. Teachers may also use Quaver’s cutting-edge teaching resources on their Interactive Whiteboards or mobile devices, enhancing the technology in your child’s classroom!
We are also working on a part of the program where you may be able to access and use part of the program at home. The students may even be able to review things we teach in class, sing songs they remember from the lessons, show you their favorite video or activity. Stay tuned for more information as we get this set up for all of our buildings.
So far we have used lessons about beat and meter.

Review 3rd grade music concepts
We will start out the year reviewing things like note names on the staff, rhythm patterns, etc. We will work on some music vocabulary in the areas of dynamics, tempos, etc. We will also try to sing some fun new songs from our new magazines and we anticipate much more fun with our new music curriculum, coming in September.
