A Happy, Healthy Me
Kindergarten Musical
April 11
Quaver is also equipped with a "full musical package" for grade levels K-3. We have decided that the Kdgn musical looks like a perfect one for us to try this year. The students are learning songs about eating, exercising and other things to stay healthy. They are enjoying the songs and we hope you are able to see them perform their premier grade school program later this spring. |

Lessons with Ms. Dixon
Ms. Dixon is our student teacher in music this spring. She was ready to jump right in and took the Kdgn grade level first. She taught them lessons on Dynamics and Tempos. They really enjoyed her activities and the lessons went very well.

QUAVER'S HOLIDAY MUSIC
We, the Willard Music teachers, got a chance to meet with a Quaver representative in mid October. Some new items were released to us at that time. We are learning new things about this curriculum all the time. These two months are FULL of fun Music and activities that coincide with Fall, Thanksgiving, Winter, and Christmas. Quaver has several options that we are excited to try out with the students. Continuing on with the lessons/units, we are now learning about pitch, melody, and meter.

Last year, the Willard Elementary and Intermediate music teachers were able to attend the Missouri Music Educators Conference in TanTara. While we were there, we saw a demonstration of a new online music education resource. This school year, we are getting a chance to utilize this resource in all of our classrooms. Students in classrooms using Quaver will be introduced to Quaver’s world via fun, video episodes – a place filled with musical adventures that is part Bill Nye the Science Guy, part Beakman, and part Monty Python all rolled into one. Teachers may also use Quaver’s cutting-edge teaching resources on their Interactive Whiteboards or mobile devices, enhancing the technology in your child’s classroom!
We are also working on a part of the program where you may be able to access and use part of the program at home. The students may even be able to review things we teach in class, sing songs they remember from the lessons, show you their favorite video or activity. Stay tuned for more information as we get this set up for all of our buildings.
So far we have used lessons about beat, voice, and rhythm.

The Kindergarten Year of Music includes a great deal of singing, reading, playing, and moving to the beat, in order to build a repertoire for future music skill building. Once the children learn the songs, well, by rote, then we will use the same songs to prepare, present, and practice many different rhythm and melodic elements and concepts.
During the first quarter, I use a pretend story about "the time Mrs. MacDonald planned a surprise birthday party for Old MacDonald and I came early to help out". Each time the students come to music, I add a new "character" to the picture, reminding me of a song, book, game, or dance that I know and think the kids will like to learn. This unit introduces them to many nursery rhymes, and American folk songs and dances, while keeping them engaged and entertained. They want to find out "who came next to the party?" or "is there a dance/game that this character makes you think of?". Very fun unit for them and for me, I will admit.
